The most interesting and informative way to acquaint oneself with history is to visit a museum. There are a number of museums across the globe depicting history, art, culture and science glorifying the various facets of human civilization on the course of its evolution. What are the various kind of museums you have visited? Have you ever thought of exploring human civilisation through the change and evolution of shit pots and commodes? Sounds stinking. Welcome to the first of its kind toilet museum across the globe – ‘Sulabh International Museum of Toilets’ in New Delhi, showcasing pride and prejudices and association of human civilisation with development of the idea of sanitation and cleanliness.

Bindeshwar Pathak, who was conferred Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his work providing sanitation facility to the masses through his Sulabh sanitation movement, is the mastermind behind the collection of replica of vintage pots down the ages. So what prompted Pathak to create this unique museum? “Once I went to the famous Madame Tussauds museum in London. I was fascinated to see the waxworks there. It was then that I thought of creating a museum. Being associated with sanitation throughout, I thought there could be no better idea than this,” Pathak replies with a sense of pride for creating something unique.

The museum is a rare collection of facts, pictures and objects detailing the historic evolution of toilets from 2500 BC till date. It provides a chronological account of development in the field of sanitation related to technology, toilet related customs, toilet etiquettes, prevailing sanitary conditions and legislative efforts of the time.

Its ironical that millions of Indian do not have access to toilets even today, the habitats of Indus valley civilisation almost 2500 years ago, had a toilet and that too connected with a sewer system, which ran throughout the cities. Not only that even the Manusmriti Vishnupuran, an ancient Sanskrit text written in around 1500 BC has hymns (shlokas) on toilet manners for both married and unmarried, and also at what distance from the source of water one should defecate.

Did you ever wonder what led women to wear stilettos, well that’s related to shit. In Medieval Europe people used to throw excreta on the roads, ladies used to wear long gowns, to prevent it (gowns) from getting dirty, stilettos were discovered.

As a kid or a grown up also one is always inquisitive to know who invented what? Did you ever enquire on who discovered flush toilet, the very part and parcel of your life. The museum has a rare record of the flush pot devised in 1596 by John Harrington, a courtier in the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1.

Human scavenging is not typically an Indian concept. During 431 BC there were scavengers in Athens, Greece, whose work was to dump all the waste at the outskirts of the towns. As per records, in Medieval Germany, people used to throw the ‘night soil’ on passers-by on the street for fun.

Records and pictures apart, what captivates the most in the museum are the various designer exquisite commodes. Among them, the most fascinating is the replica of French ruler Louis XIV toilet. Designed as a throne, the King used to attend the court’s proceedings and answer the natures’ call together.

Britain and France are known to be cultural rivals. What could have been better way to ridicule a rival then deriving themes of designing a loo from among the bests of your rival. There is a model of commode designed as stack of books with titles by various literary figures from Britain; Shakespeare being the most important.

The museum possesses aesthetically good looking commodes, chamber pots and a model of the ultimate luxury in toilets that costs less than $100. By pressing the buttons attached to the toilet seat one can get cleaning, massaging with beautiful aroma, so you can think of gifting it to someone.

If you are a frequent traveler, but toilet is one aspect that troubles you, there are many portable toilets showcased in the museum. There is an expensive American toilet seat on display that comes at the cost of $2000, which requires no water, creates no pollution as it turns your shit into ashes within no period of time.

Last, but perhaps the most innovative of all, a designer door on the entrance of the museum, which in its first appearance looks like a door made of hard material like rock/stone, but to everyone’s surprise, it is made out of human excreta. It forces you to think, ‘look its not so bad as you think’. So, its high time to think beyond eating and drinking because natures’ call matters most.
